Jung Chung-rae declared his bid for reelection as leader of South Korea's Democratic Party on Monday, turning the contest into a five-way race. Yonhap reported that Jung, who stepped down last month to run again, will compete against former Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, Reps. Song Young-gil and Ko Min-jung, and former Gangjin councilmember Kim Bo-mi at the August 17 national convention.
At a press conference at the National Assembly in Seoul, Jung said he would stand by President Lee Jae Myung by creating one team and one voice between the party, government and Cheong Wa Dae. He added that he would give up everything to ensure the stable running of state affairs under the Lee administration and help the ruling party secure another term.
The next leader will oversee nominations for the April 2028 parliamentary elections.
Jung denied suspicions that he seeks the presidency, stating he will not run for president using the office of party leader. Some pro-Lee party members have accused Jung of playing to his own supporters rather than backing the president.
