Justice Department Offers $3 Billion for State Immigration Enforcement

The Department of Justice posted a $3 billion funding opportunity on June 15 for state and local governments. The program covers locating and apprehending migrants who commit crimes, related courtroom tasks, data collection on gang activity, and temporary detention and transport of migrants.
Applicants may request funds to build or upgrade detention facilities and to recruit law enforcement officers. The money can also cover equipment such as unmanned aerial systems, body-worn cameras, and body armor. The Department of Justice stated that awards should support participation in Homeland Security Task Force activities and other efforts against gangs, cartels, and violent crime.
The program stems from provisions in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed in July 2025. That law created the Bridging Immigration-Related Deficits Experienced Nationwide Program to assist states that maintained immigration enforcement during periods of high border crossings.
State Reimbursement Sen.
John Cornyn stated that the funding is intended to reimburse states for costs incurred while responding to federal immigration policy between 2021 and 2025. He noted that Texas spent billions on border security measures during that period. The same statement said states can now apply for reimbursement of taxpayer funds used for those operations.
