abcnews.go.comPolice in Kampala arrested 53-year-old businesswoman Hope Tumwebaze from Mbarara City on allegations she defrauded an unnamed Member of Parliament of shs60 million, AllAfrica reported. Tumwebaze posed as an official from the Office of the President, according to police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke.
She solicited the funds by claiming she could secure government services earmarked for selected districts for the MP's constituency.
The MP sent the money in installments to Tumwebaze starting in June 2025, with transactions occurring in various parts of Kampala. The MP later reported the matter to police, which led to the arrest. Rusoke said investigators are examining whether other individuals were defrauded through the same scheme.
