Kansas City Chiefs' Draft Room Debate on Chris Jones Preceded 2016 Selection

Ryne Nutt recounted a significant argument in the Kansas City Chiefs' draft room almost 10 years ago, prior to the 2016 NFL Draft. The debate centered on defensive tackle Chris Jones from Mississippi State, with some members of the draft room expressing reservations about selecting him.

Clark Hunt, Andy Reid, John Dorsey, Chris Ballard, Ryan Poles, Mike Borgonzi, and Brandt Tilis were present during the discussion.

Nutt, who was an area scout for the Chiefs at the time and is now the vice president of player personnel, stated that the group agreed on the need for more depth along the defensive line. During the discussion, John Dorsey asked the group who they liked on the draft board. There was a heavy consensus for selecting Robert Nkemdiche, who was positioned next to Chris Jones on the draft board.

Dorsey executed a trade with the San Francisco 49ers, moving the Chiefs out of the first round of the draft, with the 37th pick being the centerpiece of the trade. Ultimately, the Arizona Cardinals selected Robert Nkemdiche with the 29th pick, while the Kansas City Chiefs selected Chris Jones with the 28th pick.

Since being drafted in 2016, Chris Jones has played 10 seasons in the NFL, becoming a three-time Super Bowl champion, a seven-time Pro Bowler, and a six-time All-Pro.

He has never recorded fewer than five sacks in a season during his career.
