Karmelo Anthony Files Appeal After 35-Year Sentence for Murder

Karmelo Anthony was sentenced to 35 years in prison on Tuesday after a Collin County, Texas, jury found him guilty of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Austin Metcalf. The 19-year-old Anthony received the sentence hours after the verdict in the case stemming from a confrontation at a high school track meet last year.

Anthony filed a notice of appeal on Wednesday.

The filing begins the process of challenging the conviction and sentence in a higher court.

The fatal stabbing occurred during a physical altercation at a track meet in Frisco, Texas, involving students from Memorial High School and another school. Anthony, who is Black, and Metcalf, who was white, became involved in a confrontation that escalated when Anthony used a knife.
