Patel was born in New York in 1980.
He earned a J.D. from Pace University School of Law in 2005 and worked as a public defender in Miami-Dade County before becoming a national security prosecutor in Washington, D.C. Patel joined the House Intelligence Committee staff in 2017 and later held positions at the National Security Council and Department of Defense through 2021.
After leaving government in 2021, Patel received consulting contracts from the Qatari government, a California gas storage company, and conservative political groups. He also published three children's books and hosted a podcast. In 2022, Patel and a partner purchased 3.6 acres in Chantilly, Virginia, for $550,000 through multiple LLCs. The property remains unsold.
His current federal salary is $183,100 due to a pay freeze in effect since 2014. An FBI spokesperson declined to comment on the Forbes net worth estimate. Patel has denied allegations of misusing federal resources for personal travel and drinking on the job.
