A conservative social media commentator claimed on Monday that an unnamed source told her the senator was brain dead and on life support, but provided no evidence. Top Republicans have said they spoke with the senator in conversations lasting about 20 minutes each.

A 2024 state law ended the governor's power to appoint an interim senator. Any vacancy before August 3 would trigger a special election. The governor has stated the law is unconstitutional, leaving the process unclear if the seat becomes vacant.
