ecns.cnHeavy security was deployed across parts of Kiambu County and sections of Thika Road on Monday after incidents of vandalism, road barricades and vehicle damage were reported during a nationwide public service vehicle strike over rising fuel prices. The unrest escalated along the Thika Superhighway, where protesters lit tires, blocked road sections and clashed with police, disrupting traffic for hours during the morning rush hour.
At least one private vehicle was set on fire and several others were damaged near Githurai and Kenyatta Road, sending smoke across the corridor. Motorists made U-turns and many public service vehicles, motorcycle taxis and private drivers abandoned routes or sought alternatives as access became difficult.
Commissioner George Matundura said security teams had been sent to restore access along Lower Kabete and the Western Bypass after groups barricaded roads. He also confirmed heavy security presence along Thika Superhighway to restore order and protect motorists.
In Meru County, police cleared barricades on the Nkubu-Thingithu-Uruku Road and Meru-Embu Highway. County Commissioner John Cheruiyot said officers acted to restore traffic flow. In Mombasa, authorities contained a tire-burning attempt on Old Malindi Road.
County Commissioner Mohamed Hassan said boda boda and tuk tuk operators helped keep some transport services running. In Samburu County, matatu operators in Maralal suspended services. County Commissioner Isaac Cheruiyot said officials were monitoring the situation.
In Nandi County, police prevented attempts to block the Kapsabet-Chavakali Road and Kapsabet Town. County Commissioner Wilberforce Kilonzo said officers remained on alert.
The Transport Sector Alliance organized the strike, which drew support from matatu operators, truckers, boda boda associations and private motorists. Major public service vehicle firms suspended services on Monday, affecting movement in several towns.
