National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has rejected assertions by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka that the Finance Bill 2026 would impose an annual rent on freehold land. Mbadi said the bill contains no provisions for yearly charges on freehold land. He stated that debate on the matter stems from misinformation.

"The government's focus in the Finance Bill 2026 is on improving tax administration, enhancing fairness in the tax system, and broadening equity in revenue collection rather than introducing new levies on land ownership," he stated. Mbadi advised leaders and the public to consult official government documentation when reviewing tax proposals.

He noted that inaccurate information could generate public anxiety.

The clarification was issued as political discussion continues over the Finance Bill 2026, which is scheduled for consideration in Parliament.
