Kenyan activist Davis Lichuma was found alive on or around June 29, 2026, at Kenyatta National Hospital before transfer to Nairobi Women's Hospital for treatment, AllAfrica reported. He was unable to speak when discovered. The Social Justice Centres Working Group said his reappearance followed an arrest on Gen Z Mashujaa Day and removal from a gazetted police station.
Activist Boniface Mwangi stated that individuals described as Ruto's rogue police squad, who drive Subarus and mask their faces, carried out the removal. A missing person's report for Lichuma was filed at Central Police Station in Nairobi. National Police Service spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga confirmed receipt of the report and said the service takes allegations of enforced disappearances and torture seriously.
Nyaga added that all reports would be investigated thoroughly, professionally, impartially and expeditiously. The National Police Service remains dedicated to professional policing, upholds constitutional rights, and follows all legal procedures, he stated. Lawyer Willis Otieno described the reported ordeal as heartbreaking, deeply disturbing and utterly inhumane.
No Kenyan should suffer violence or torture for exercising constitutional rights, and such acts have no place in a democratic society governed by the rule of law, Otieno said.
