U.S. Department of State from United States / Wikimedia (Public domain)Kenyan athlete Sebastian Sawe achieved a historic milestone by running the London Marathon in 1:59:30 on Sunday, becoming the first person to break the two-hour barrier in a competitive race. This time beat the previous world record of 2:00:35 set by the late Kelvin Kiptum at the 2023 Chicago Marathon.
Sawe, who has won all four marathons he has entered since his debut in Valencia in 2024, ran the second half of the race in 59:01 after crossing the halfway mark in 1:00:29. Sawe returned to Kenya on Thursday, landing at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi amid jubilant crowds, dancers, and musicians.
His plane received a water cannon salute upon arrival. His parents, including father Simeon Sawe, traveled six hours to greet him, with supporters creating a crush of cameras.
" Ruto described the achievement as a defining moment in human endurance and a source of national pride. Sawe gifted Ruto the shoes he wore during the race and stated his performance was for the nation.
“Sabastian, you have not only broken a record, you have expanded the horizon of human potential.”
Sawe expressed surprise at the warm reception, telling the crowd he did not expect such celebrations. His father recalled Sawe's determination, noting he had long hoped to break the record. Sawe mentioned feeling good after the race and plans to compete again in the autumn, aiming for an even faster time.
Ruto highlighted Kenya's dominance in marathon running, with the country holding the men's world record since 2011. He praised Kenyan athletes as effective ambassadors for the nation. The president reaffirmed government commitments to sports, including building Talanta Sports City, renovating Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums, and constructing 25 additional stadiums.
The government is establishing constituency sports academies to nurture young talent and has proposed the Sports Bill 2026 to create a national sports regulator. Rewards for international athletes will increase, including higher prize money and daily allowances.
Sawe's unbeaten streak and consistency were noted as examples of discipline and championship mindset.
“You have achieved what many believed could never be done. You have made the impossible possible, and in doing so, you have inspired a nation, inspired a generation, and inspired the world.”
Fans in Nairobi told reporters that Sawe's accomplishment inspired them to pursue their dreams. The event marked a significant moment for Sawe's family and the country, with celebrations continuing from the airport to the presidential meeting. Sawe's run was more than one minute faster than the prior record, solidifying his place in athletics history.
