espn.comJohn Korir of Kenya broke the Boston Marathon course record in the men's race on Monday, finishing in 2 hours, 1 minute, and 52 seconds. This time marked the fifth-fastest marathon ever recorded. Korir retained his title from the previous year, outrunning what sources described as the strongest field in the event's history amid favorable tailwinds.
Sharon Lokedi of Kenya also defended her women's title, securing Kenyan victories in both elite races for the second consecutive year.
Marcel Hug of Switzerland claimed his ninth men's wheelchair victory, and Eden Rainbow-Cooper of Britain won the women's wheelchair race. This places Hug second in all-time Boston men's wheelchair titles, behind Ernst van Dyk's record of 10 victories between 2001 and 2014.
American racer Daniel Romanchuk finished second in the men's wheelchair race with a time of 1:22:44, followed by Jetze Plat of the Netherlands in 1:24:13.
Race Conditions and Context
The 130th edition of the Boston Marathon started under clear skies with temperatures in the low 40s, the coldest start since 2018 when it was 38 degrees and raining. Runners arrived in Hopkinton with frost on the ground, and temperatures reached 45 degrees by the elite start. Ideal weather and a tailwind contributed to expectations of fast times.
Hug established an early lead, building a 13-second advantage over David Weir of Britain by the 3-mile mark, which grew to 55 seconds by the halfway point. Since winning the Berlin Marathon in 2022, Hug has lost only one of seven world major titles, finishing second at the New York Marathon in 2024.
More than 30,000 participants followed the defending champions in the world's oldest and most prestigious annual marathon.
Historical Performance
Korir's record-breaking run surpassed previous Boston benchmarks in a field noted for its depth. Lokedi's repeat victory continued Kenya's strong showing in the event. Hug's dominance in wheelchair racing includes consistent performances across major marathons in recent years.
