Kielder Forest in England Marks 100 Years Since Initial Tree Planting
Kielder Forest, England's largest, spans 250 square miles across Northumberland and Cumbria with 158 million trees. The forest originated from experimental planting in April 1926 and has since developed into a major site for timber production, tourism, and wildlife. A commemorative tree planting is scheduled near Stannersburn on Saturday.
Substrate placeholder — needs reviewAdditional workers came from the Government Instructional Centre, which opened south of Kielder in 1933 and provided training for long-term unemployed individuals from Tyneside and Scotland.
These workers lived in hutted camps. After World War Two, mechanization increased, with chainsaws replacing handsaws. Three villages—Kielder, Byrness, and Stonehaugh—were built for workers, though eight had been planned.
Timber from the forest was primarily purchased by the National Coal Board for use as pit props in mine tunnels. In 1982, Kielder Water, the largest constructed lake in northern Europe, was completed.
The forest's future development remains ongoing.
