Kim Jong-un convened a joint meeting of the party, state and military on Friday, 10 July 2026, focused on corruption among senior officials, South China Morning Post reported. The session marked the first of its kind devoted specifically to the issue, according to observers. During the meeting Kim publicly denounced former major general Pak Hui-chol.
Pak had served until recently as deputy director for organisational affairs in the Korean People’s Army General Political Bureau. Pak was accused of operating a four-year scheme that sold promotions, extracted bribes, placed loyalists in key posts and embezzled state funds, South China Morning Post reported.
On the previous day Kim presided over a meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea’s Central Military Commission in Pyongyang.
Yang Moo-jin, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies, said the actions sent a clear signal. “Kim is effectively telling military and party leaders: ‘Don’t even think about it. You are under round-the-clock surveillance,’” he stated.
