This marks the second serious accident involving the royal convoy in recent years. In October 2024, the King survived a head-on collision on the R34 when his Range Rover struck a municipal vehicle in Vryheid.
In a separate matter, police in Babanango arrested a fellow officer and two accomplices on Friday after finding 31 bales of dagga in a white Toyota Rumion on the R34 road. The driver, identified as a constable with the Public Order Police in Durban, faces charges of dealing in dagga.
KZN Traditional Affairs MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi separately urged traditional leaders to maintain unity during a planning session in the Drakensberg.
