Protests have grown in recent days in Albania over plans by Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law, to develop luxury properties on the Albanian coast. Demonstrators in the capital and in coastal towns have cited concerns about transparency and potential environmental effects. Another protest was scheduled for Tuesday night in Tirana.

4 billion luxury hotel complex on an island off the coast and a separate development on a peninsula that contains sensitive wetlands. The plans have generated concerns about conservation and transparency for years. Jared Kushner is one of several investors in the project.

Prime Minister Edi Rama has repeatedly described the projects as a chance to expand the country’s booming tourist economy and to attract foreign investors. He has rejected suggestions by opponents that Kushner received preferential treatment to curry favor with his father-in-law, President Trump. Albania remains one of Europe’s poorest countries.
