NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch has been hospitalized with a severe illness and will not compete this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. His family released a statement Thursday saying Busch is currently undergoing treatment. The statement asked for understanding and privacy as the family navigates the situation.

Busch had been scheduled to race in Friday night’s Truck Series event and Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600.

Two weeks earlier at Watkins Glen International, Busch radioed his crew during the race requesting medical assistance. He received a shot after finishing eighth and had reportedly been dealing with a sinus infection throughout the weekend. Busch skipped the Truck Series race that same weekend, with Connor Mosack filling in for him.

Childress Racing, Busch’s team, said his health is the organization’s top priority. The team added that it has provided full resources to Busch and his family. Austin Hill will drive the No. 8 Chevrolet in Busch’s place this weekend. The team thanked Hill for stepping in on short notice.

Kyle has experienced a severe illness resulting in hospitalization.

Busch has missed races before for health reasons, including the first 11 events of the 2015 season after a crash at Daytona International Speedway.
