Labour Loses Over 600 Seats in UK Local Elections
Prime Minister Keir Starmer's Labour Party suffered major losses in last week's local elections across England, dropping more than 600 council seats and control of about 40 councils. Reform UK captured the most seats while the Green Party gained hundreds under new leader Zack Polanski.
Abc NewsPrime Minister Keir Starmer is fighting to save his job after Labour suffered devastating losses in local elections held across England last week and legislative votes in Scotland and Wales. The party lost over 600 council seats, 1,500 councillors and about 40 councils. Reform UK captured the most seats while the Green Party added hundreds under its new leader Zack Polanski.
Labour lost support to Reform UK and the Green Party. Five parties each received more than 15% of the total votes cast: Reform, Labour, the Conservatives, the Green Party, and the Liberal Democrats. Nationalist parties did well in parliamentary elections in Scotland and Wales.
Starmer plans to use a speech on Monday to argue that he can change tack and revive his government’s fortunes. He told The Observer that he wants to remain in office for a decade and serve for two terms or 10 years. " Starmer has ruled out seeking to reenter the EU or to rejoin the EU’s customs union or single market.
The United Kingdom left the EU in 2020, four years after the "leave" side narrowly won a membership referendum in 2016. Labour campaigned to stay in the EU during the 2016 referendum campaign. Starmer’s government has already moved to ease some of the trade restrictions that have burdened British businesses since Brexit.
He says he will secure a youth mobility deal so young people can spend a few years working across the continent. Starmer has attempted to refresh his government by bringing back former prime minister Gordon Brown as an adviser on finance and former Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman as an adviser on women and girls.
He also appointed Peter Mandelson, a friend of Jeffrey Epstein, as Britain’s ambassador to Washington.
Starmer swept to power in a landslide less than two years ago. The next general election need not be held until the summer of 2029. Catherine West said she will challenge the prime minister for the leadership on Monday if he does not set out a timetable to resign.
She acknowledged she does not have the support of 81 colleagues needed to force a contest. Backers of Andy Burnham have been trying to persuade Catherine West to withdraw her bid. " Supporters of Angela Rayner say she is not set on being the candidate but is prepared for the possibility of launching a leadership bid.
Some on the left have been urging Ed Miliband to be their candidate. " Wes Streeting’s local Redbridge council was retained by Labour. Bridget Phillipson said Labour MPs would be wrong to remove Starmer even though voters had given the party a "real kicking" and people felt "bitterly let down".
Bridget Phillipson said Labour had been "too gloomy" and had made a mistake in trying to withdraw the winter fuel allowance. About 40 Labour MPs called for Starmer to quit or name an exit date. Ministers including Shabana Mahmood, Lisa Nandy and Pat McFadden remained silent about the party’s loss of 1,500 councillors and about 40 councils.
A Labour cabinet source said there is residual loyalty to Keir but they are at end of their tether. The same source said you cannot say you are listening to the message of voters and then park everything for six months or more. " In the 2024 general election, Starmer got fewer votes than Jeremy Corbyn did in the 2019 general election.
Reform is hovering around the twenties in national polls. Net migration has fallen dramatically in Britain. Zack Polanski falsely claimed that the suspect in an attack on two Jewish people in London was kicked in the head while already handcuffed.
King Charles III is scheduled to deliver a speech at the State Opening of Parliament on Wednesday outlining legislative plans.
