Lakers Sign Kevon Looney to One-Year Deal as Backup Center
The team added the 30-year-old veteran on a one-year, $3.9 million contract. Looney will back up newly acquired starter Walker Kessler.

The Lakers signed veteran center Kevon Looney to a one-year, $3.9-million contract on Tuesday. Looney, 30, spent 11 seasons in the league and won three championships with the Golden State Warriors in 2017, 2018 and 2021. He played last season with the New Orleans Pelicans after attending UCLA.
Looney will serve as backup to Walker Kessler, who agreed to a four-year, $130-million deal after arriving from the Utah Jazz in a sign-and-trade. The Lakers previously traded Deandre Ayton and saw backup Jaxson Hayes depart for the Jazz. The team now holds a 14-man roster with one roster spot remaining.
The Lakers are also pursuing forward Jonathan Kuminga on a proposed two-year, $20-million contract. Kuminga, 23 and 6-foot-7, averaged 12.2 points and 5.6 rebounds while shooting 33.3 percent from three-point range last season with the Warriors and Atlanta Hawks.
