Lancaster Bomber Sculpture Unveiled Near A46 in Lincolnshire
A new sculpture of a Lancaster bomber was opened to the public this week beside the A46 between Newark and Lincoln. The work stands taller than the Angel of the North and weighs more than 100 tonnes.
bbc.co.ukMembers of the public viewed a new sculpture of a Lancaster bomber for the first time this week. The piece, titled “On Freedom’s Wings,” sits next to the A46 on the border between Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. The sculpture commemorates the role of Lancaster bombers during World War Two. The aircraft operated from bases in Lincolnshire, an area then known as Bomber County.
The Bomber County Gateway Trust began the project eight years ago. The completed sculpture was lifted into place in September 2025. GB News viewers contributed thousands of pounds toward the effort. Charlie White, chairman of the trust, said the public opening marked the end of eight years of work.
He added that the sculpture was placed so drivers could see it from the road and feel welcomed into the region. The structure stands taller than the Angel of the North and weighs more than 100 tonnes. Steel beams hold the aircraft in a bank turn and are designed to resemble searchlights.
The sculpture is modeled on Lancaster VN-N, which crashed near RAF Swinderby in September 1942. Rae Morley, daughter-in-law of the aircraft’s pilot, traveled from Australia for the dedication ceremony. She said the memorial honors all personnel who served in Bomber Command. The site is scheduled to open officially later this summer, with tens of thousands of visitors expected.
