A landslide struck Pengshui County in Chongqing at 9:08 a.m. on July 17, 2026, sending rocks and soil downslope that buried more than 10 residential buildings and left an undetermined number of people trapped. State broadcaster CCTV reported that at least 10 people were rescued from the rubble, with search operations continuing amid unstable terrain and the risk of further slides.
The event occurred near the Wujiang River in karst mountains. Two buildings roughly five and 15 stories tall sustained damage but remained standing. Rescuers used excavators to clear debris while images showed orange-clad teams pulling victims from the site.
Authorities suspended water, electricity and gas supplies within a one-kilometer radius after several power poles were buried. They distributed more than 8,000 relief items including tents, folding beds and emergency kits to the affected area. Pengshui County lies in southeastern Chongqing and borders Hubei and Guizhou provinces.
The landslide forced more than 1,100 residents to evacuate, according to state media reports.
