A landslide struck Pengshui County in Chongqing at 9:08 a.m. Friday, killing eight people and leaving 34 others missing. The slide sent rocks and soil downslope near the Wujiang River, burying more than 10 residential buildings.
Ten people were rescued from the rubble, including two with serious injuries. More than 1,100 residents evacuated the area. Water, electricity and gas supplies were cut off within a one-kilometer radius.
Over 800 rescuers reached the site and used excavators to clear debris. Unstable terrain and the risk of further slides slowed operations. Two damaged buildings, roughly five and 15 stories tall, remained standing.
Authorities dispatched more than 8,000 relief items, including tents, folding beds and emergency kits. Pengshui County lies in southeastern Chongqing and borders the provinces of Hubei and Guizhou.
