Lane Kiffin Says He Regrets Not Announcing Ole Miss Exit Immediately
LSU coach Lane Kiffin said he should have told Ole Miss officials he was leaving right away rather than trying to stay through the College Football Playoff. The comments came five months after his departure from the program.
nypost.comLSU coach Lane Kiffin said he regrets not immediately telling Ole Miss he was leaving for LSU last December. Kiffin led Ole Miss for six years and built a competitive SEC program. LSU hired him after the regular season ended, prompting a dispute over whether he would remain for the Rebels' College Football Playoff run.
Kiffin wanted to coach the team through the postseason before leaving before those games. Ole Miss promoted defensive coordinator Pete Golding to replace him. "I think I would have just come in and said, 'OK, I'm leaving,'" Kiffin said on the "Pardon My Take" podcast.
He added that he spent time trying to keep the staff and program together for a potential national title run. The transition created scheduling changes and an altered team meeting before Golding took over. Ole Miss reached the College Football Playoff semifinals under Golding and lost to Miami 31-27.
Kiffin held his introductory press conference at LSU on Dec. 1, 2025. He has since assembled the top transfer portal class according to 247 Sports and will face Ole Miss in his third game as LSU coach.
