Latvia defeats United States 4-2 at ice hockey world championship

Haralds Egle gave Latvia a 1-0 lead in the first period. Matthew Tkachuk tied the score with a power-play goal in the second period.
Deniss Smirnovs scored early in the third to put Latvia ahead 2-1. The United States pulled its goaltender for an extra attacker, but Vilmanis scored with 1:02 remaining to extend the lead to 3-1. Mathieu Olivier cut the deficit to one goal with 51 seconds left.
Vilmanis added his second empty-net goal with 42 seconds remaining to seal the 4-2 victory.
Other results Switzerland defeated Hungary 9-0 in Zurich.
Roman Josi recorded a hat trick and an assist, while Sven Andrighetto had one goal and four assists. Denmark defeated Slovenia 4-0. Czechia defeated Slovakia 3-2. Canada remains the only unbeaten team in Group B.
