U.S. actress Laura Dern has been announced as a new cast member for the fourth season of The White Lotus, replacing British actress Helena Bonham Carter. Bonham Carter left the production last week due to creative differences that became apparent after filming began.
HBO reported that the character created for her by series creator Mike White did not align once on set. The network stated the role would be recast and has now confirmed Dern's involvement. An HBO spokesperson said the producers and White remain fans of Bonham Carter and hope to collaborate with her in the future.
Dern, who has previously worked with White on projects including the 2007 film Year of the Dog and the TV series Enlightened, will join the season four cast.
The fourth season is being filmed in the south of France and is set against the backdrop of the Cannes Film Festival. Shooting is expected to continue during the festival, scheduled from May 13 to 24, 2026. Previous seasons of The White Lotus were set in Hawaii, Italy, and Thailand, each at an upmarket hotel.
The series has received multiple Emmy Awards. Dern, an Oscar winner for her role in the 2020 film Marriage Story, is known for appearances in films such as Blue Velvet, Jurassic Park, and Wild, as well as TV shows including Big Little Lies and Twin Peaks: The Return.
She earned a Golden Globe for her performance in Enlightened, which she co-created with White and which ran from 2011 to 2013.
The season four cast includes Steve Coogan, Kumail Nanjiani, Sandra Bernhard, Heather Graham, and Vincent Cassel. Bonham Carter is recognized for roles in films including Harry Potter, A Room with a View, The Wings of the Dove, The King's Speech, and the TV series The Crown. HBO did not provide further details on the creative differences leading to her exit.
