A member of Congress called for the dismantlement of Immigration and Customs Enforcement during a public forum in Washington on Wednesday. The representative said lawmakers should hold a broad review of the agency's role in federal immigration enforcement. The comments referenced two recent fatal shootings involving ICE officers, one in Houston and another in Biddeford, Maine.
The lawmaker announced plans to travel to Houston for a field hearing on the circumstances surrounding a death that occurred last week. Officials stated the hearing would include witness testimony and review of available evidence. The representative also advocated for body cameras on ICE and Customs and Border Protection personnel.
Legislation introduced by the lawmaker would require footage from encounters involving criminal activity or disputed pursuits to be available as court evidence.
The proposed measure expands on a body-camera pilot program that began under the prior administration. A third incident occurred Tuesday in St. Louis, where a Mexican national was struck by a tractor-trailer after fleeing an ICE stop. President Trump stated on Wednesday that ICE traffic stops would continue.
The Department of Homeland Security secretary separately said the agency would maintain arrest and deportation operations and encouraged individuals present unlawfully to depart.
