UFC Event Planned for White House South Lawn on July 4, 2026
A lawsuit filed by two private plaintiffs seeks to block a UFC card scheduled for June 14 on federal parkland in Washington, D.C. The complaint alleges the event violates National Park Service rules and lacks required congressional approval for structures on the South Lawn.
truthout.orgA lawsuit filed on behalf of activist Susan Douglas and Vietnam War veteran Paul Romano asks a court to halt a UFC mixed-martial-arts card planned for June 14 on the South Lawn of the White House. The complaint names the National Park Service, the Interior Department, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum as defendants.
It argues that the event violates a National Park Service regulation that bars sporting events on federal parklands.
The suit states the card is a celebration of the UFC’s brand and President Trump’s 80th birthday rather than the 250th anniversary of American independence. The two plaintiffs claim they are suffering “aesthetic” and “procedural harms” from the planned event.
The complaint further argues that no structure may be erected on federal parklands in the District of Columbia without express congressional authorization.
Construction of the UFC’s 92-foot, 600-ton steel structure called “the Claw” began on the South Lawn on May 26, 2026. The lawsuit states that no such authorization exists for the structure. The Public Integrity Project noted that events planned by the Semiquincentennial Commission can be exempted from the sporting-event ban, but cited reports indicating the commission has no responsibility for the UFC card.
The lawsuit describes the event as “a private profit-motivated sports promotion” that will likely be profitable for UFC and its partners.
White estimated that UFC will lose $30 million on the event and has denied that any tax dollars will be spent on it. President Trump purchased between $15,000 and $50,000 worth of stock in TKO, UFC’s parent company, in March 2026, according to his financial disclosures.
” The official added that the event is no different from other White House-hosted events on the South Lawn and properly permitted events on the Ellipse and National Mall.
