Laxative improved memory and attention in small depression study

A study published Monday found that adults who took a daily laxative performed better on cognitive tests than those who received a placebo. Fifty patients aged 18 to 40 with a history of depressive episodes were assigned to take either 2 milligrams of prucalopride or an inactive pill each day for seven to ten days.
Researchers tested working memory, verbal learning, attention and processing speed before and after the treatment period. Those who received the active medication completed the tasks more quickly and accurately than the placebo group.
How the drug acts Prucalopride stimulates bowel movements and also activates serotonin receptors known as 5HT4 that are present in both the gut and the brain. These receptors influence gut motility as well as learning, memory and mood regulation. The senior author stated that many people recovering from depression continue to experience memory and concentration problems.
The study provides early evidence that 5HT4 receptor agonists could help restore aspects of cognitive function.
Earlier findings Previous research published in 2024 indicated that 5HT4 receptor agonists used for constipation may lower the risk of depression in people without prior illness. Separate studies have linked depressive symptoms in middle age to declines in memory and thinking skills.
