League executives name top offseason roster moves
NFL team personnel identified several trades, signings and draft selections as their preferred roster changes from the past five months. The moves range from high-value player acquisitions to a debated draft pick.
ESPNLeague executives and scouts surveyed by ESPN identified several roster transactions completed since late February as their preferred offseason moves. Personnel cited a wide receiver trade that brought a player under contract for roughly $41 million over the next two years.
The acquiring team had pursued the player at the November trade deadline and again before free agency before completing the deal in March.
Garrett trade draws broad approval Executives also pointed to the exchange of a veteran pass rusher for draft compensation. The receiving side gained an established defender while the sending side moved the player amid its own roster timeline. One NFC executive noted the possibility that the addition could influence another veteran defender's retirement decision.
Draft selection draws mixed views A late-round selection of a wide receiver also appeared on multiple lists. Some evaluators viewed the pick as a value selection; others questioned the positional need. The survey was conducted after most clubs completed organized team activities and as roughly a dozen teams prepared to finish minicamp.
