New Leaseholder Begins Repairs at Southend Kursaal
The Grade II-listed Kursaal in Southend-on-Sea has a new leaseholder after closing in 2020. Remblance Leisure Limited plans to restore the building for leisure use.
bbc.co.ukThe BBC was granted access to the Grade II-listed Kursaal in Southend-on-Sea, which has stood vacant since 2020. The building now has a new leaseholder, Remblance Leisure Limited, led by Star Amusements. The Kursaal previously hosted concerts by Queen and AC/DC and served as a zoo, bowling alley, and the original home of Southend United football club.
It was added to the Victorian Society's list of the most endangered buildings in the country.
Water damage has created holes in ceilings and floor panels throughout the structure. The main entrance hall shows scaffolding and a star-patterned floor beneath its dome with mostly intact stained-glass panels. The former bowling lanes have been removed. Structural repairs are listed as the immediate priority.
The leaseholder intends to create a leisure venue with bars, restaurants, and music under one roof once repairs are complete.
