Lebanon’s aviation regulator has launched a safety audit of Middle East Airlines after pilot groups raised concerns that crews were being asked to fly close to airstrikes and were penalized for reporting safety incidents. Letters seen by Reuters described the complaints from the pilot groups.

The audit places new scrutiny on the Beirut-based flag carrier, which operates a fleet of around 20 planes.

Middle East Airlines has maintained service through war and financial collapse. -Israeli war against Iran began in February. The airline flies routes in the Middle East, Europe and West Africa. It has been praised at home for continuing operations during regional conflict and for supporting a weak economy that now depends more heavily on tourism and expatriate remittances.
