Liam and Olivia Top U.S. Baby Names Again in 2025 as Total Births Decline

Liam and Olivia remained the most popular baby names in the United States for 2025, according to data released by the Social Security Administration. Noah ranked second among boys and Oliver third. On the girls’ side, Charlotte moved into second place while Emma fell to third.

The total marked a decline from 3,628,418 applications in 2024 and remained well below the 2007 peak of 4,332,400. Kasai rose 1,108 spots among boys’ names, moving from rank 1,747 in 2024 to 639 in 2025. Klarity recorded the largest gain among girls, climbing 1,396 places from rank 2,187 to 791.

The Social Security Administration listed Kasai, Akari, Eziah, Jasai, and Neithan as the boys’ names with the largest increases. Klarity, Rynlee, Ailanny, Naylani, and Madisson topped the girls’ list of fastest risers. The Social Security Administration began compiling the baby name list in 1997 using data dating back to 1880.

Variations and alternate spellings are counted separately. Hyphens and spaces are removed from the first-name field, so names such as Julie-Anne, Julie Anne, and Julieanne are grouped together.

U.S. Territories are tracked separately. Names must include the year of birth, sex, and state of birth on record and be at least two characters long to qualify for the list. The agency noted that getting a Social Security number at birth is typically part of the birth-certificate process, sometimes completed at the hospital.

There is no charge from the Social Security Administration for the number or card. A child generally needs a Social Security number for parents to claim the child as a dependent on a federal income tax return. The requirement applies to the child tax credit, additional child tax credit, and Earned Income Tax Credit, even if the child was born alive and died during the year.
