Liberia's General Auditing Commission is hosting a week-long regional conference of 26 auditors general from English-speaking African countries. The gathering, organized under the African Organization of English-speaking Supreme Audit Institutions, began Monday, May 18, and continues through Friday, May 22, at venues in Monrovia.

The conference marks the first time Liberia has hosted the regional body since its founding. Officials said the event reflects growing recognition of the country's audit reforms and public financial oversight.

Sessions will review progress under the organization's 2025-2029 strategic plan and address challenges in public sector auditing. Discussions will cover transparency, audit system strengthening, peer-review mechanisms, and technology use in auditing.

A two-day governing board meeting and a two-day strategic review meeting are scheduled, including panel discussions on audit and governance issues. The official opening is expected to draw more than 100 participants.

Representatives from the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development are expected to attend. The Liberian government has invited officials from the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, the Office of the Vice President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the President Pro Tempore of the Senate.

Former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and former Finance and Development Planning Minister Dr. Antoinette Sayeh are scheduled to deliver keynote papers. The conference will conclude with an excursion to the Marshall belt and the adoption of resolutions on the strategic plan, regional cooperation, and public finance oversight.

An economist said hosting the meetings positions Liberia's General Auditing Commission as an institution capable of engaging at the continental level on audit reforms.
