Liberty guard averages 21 points over four games after early-season injury return

New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu entered Saturday averaging 21.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.8 steals over her previous four games. The stretch followed an earlier period in which she had struggled after returning from injuries that kept her out for most of the first five weeks of the season.

Recent performance and team results Ionescu scored 12 points in the Liberty’s 108-88 loss to the opposing team on July 18 in Indianapolis. The Liberty have now lost four straight games. Ionescu said she is focused on winning and finding ways to help the team rather than on her individual statistics.

Player and union statements Ionescu described the past few weeks as a “rocky process” but said she expected to regain her rhythm. Women’s National Basketball Players Association leaders are scheduled to meet with the league, including commissioner Cathy Engelbert, next week to discuss increasing online harassment of players.

WNBPA vice president Breanna Stewart said the union’s executive committee has been invited to the meeting and called the dialogue necessary. Aces guard Chelsea Gray shared a screenshot this week of a direct message containing a racial slur.
