MK Tally Gotliv of the Likud party called for the dismissal of IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir after Zamir sent a letter warning of a severe shortage of 17,000 soldiers. The letter addressed shortfalls in the context of draft legislation under debate in the Knesset. Gotliv's demand followed directly from the warning.
MK Osher Shekalim stated that the chief of staff should be the number one soldier and nothing else. Shekalim added that the chief of staff is not supposed to be a lawmaker and is not supposed to set policy. Shekalim spoke during a June 29, 2026 meeting of the Special Committee for the Communications Law at the Knesset in Jerusalem.
