Lindsey Vonn Says Left Leg Healing Well Without ACL While Right Ankle Remains Broken

Lindsey Vonn said on July 17 that her left leg is healing really nicely even though it still lacks an ACL, while her right ankle remains broken. The 41-year-old skier added that she needs to have metal removed and the left leg fixed, noting that the right ankle has been the problem child.

Usa Today reported that Vonn made the comments during an appearance on SportsCenter at Fanatics Fest in New York.

She described the current recovery as longer and more painful than any prior injury, including those from her earlier career. Vonn suffered a compound fracture and tibial plateau fracture in her left leg along with a broken right ankle on February 8 during the downhill at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics.

She clipped a gate 13 seconds into her run, was thrown down the mountain, and was airlifted off the course nine days after rupturing her left ACL.

She underwent multiple surgeries, including a fasciotomy to save the left leg after compartment syndrome developed. Since hospital release she has rehabbed at her Park City, Utah home and followed her doctor's advice to take a safari in South Africa. In May Vonn walked the 2026 Met Gala red carpet without crutches.

She attended the ESPYs in New York, presented the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award to Stephen Curry, and told USA TODAY on July 16 that her legs did not hurt after wearing heels for an extended period. Earlier this month she was named to Time's 100 Most Influential People in Sports 2026 list and celebrated at the inaugural TIME100 Sports Gala in New York City on July 16.

Vonn posted on Instagram the next day that the honor meant a great deal to her.
