LIRR Union Reaches Tentative Deal With MTA After Three-Day Strike
Governor and transit officials agreed to a contract with rail workers that includes a 4.5 percent pay increase. The deal ends a work stoppage that disrupted travel for thousands of commuters.
New York PostTransit officials and union representatives reached a tentative agreement that ended a three-day strike by Long Island Rail Road workers. The contract grants a 4.5 percent wage increase for 2026, slightly below the 5 percent raise sought by the 3,500 workers from five labor groups. Earlier raises of 3 percent in 2023, 3 percent in 2024, and 3.5 percent in 2025 had already been approved.
Workers will also receive a $3,000 lump-sum payment.
Officials rejected a union request for paid time to complete a 16-hour computer-based training course. LIRR President Rob Free said during a Tuesday press conference that negotiators found common ground on terms that would not impose additional costs on taxpayers or riders.
Full train service was scheduled to resume by 4 p.m. Tuesday for the evening rush hour, with some trains operating from noon onward. Commuters who had used buses or personal vehicles Tuesday morning expressed relief at the settlement. One rider preparing for final exams said the restored service would allow a normal commute for the remainder of the week.
