Lloyds Banking Group will phase out the Halifax brand and move all customer accounts to Lloyds. The change follows reports in May that the group was considering dropping Halifax as a separate brand.
The IndependentLloyds Banking Group will phase out the Halifax brand and transfer all customer accounts to Lloyds over time. The banking group, which has owned Halifax since 2009, said customers do not need to take any action and will be contacted about the transition.
The decision comes after reports in May indicated the group was considering ending Halifax as a standalone brand. Officials described the move as part of efforts to simplify the group's portfolio, noting that distinctions between Halifax and Lloyds had become less prominent in recent years.
Halifax was founded in West Yorkshire in 1853 and grew into one of the UK's largest building societies. It listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1997, later merged with Bank of Scotland, and was acquired by Lloyds Banking Group. Halifax remains one of the UK's largest mortgage lenders and serves millions of customers with current and savings accounts.
Lloyds will become the group's lead brand in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, while Bank of Scotland will continue unchanged.
Jas Singh, Lloyds Banking Group’s chief executive of consumer relationships, said Halifax customers will retain the same app design, branch staff, sort code, and account number. Customers will also gain access to Lloyds innovations and services. Customers will be contacted through the Halifax app, online banking, email, and letters in the coming days and weeks.
Halifax will stop opening new accounts as part of the phase-out, and existing branches will be rebranded to Lloyds or moved to nearby Lloyds branches throughout 2027. Lloyds said it remains committed to the town of Halifax and the Yorkshire and Humber region, where 3,000 staff work at the Trinity Road office.
The group recently invested £116 million in that office, which will include a display celebrating the Halifax brand's history. No job cuts have been announced as part of the change.
