Muldoon and Richards, 55, dated in the late 1990s and shared a deep friendship after their breakup. Richards stated on a 2025 episode of her reality show that she stopped speaking to Muldoon during her marriage to Charlie Sheen to avoid issues. Richards and Charlie Sheen married in 2002, had two daughters including Lola, and separated in 2006.

Muldoon and Richards reconnected last year. Richards was with her estranged husband, Aaron Phypers, at the time of the reconnection. Richards has not publicly commented on Muldoon's death.
