London to Add 200 New School Streets Restricting Vehicle Access
Transport for London will launch 200 additional School Street projects across the capital by 2030. The measures restrict vehicle access near schools during drop-off and pick-up times.
thewalrus.caTransport for London will launch 200 new School Street projects across London by the end of the decade. The projects restrict vehicle access on roads near schools during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up periods. The restrictions aim to improve road safety and encourage walking and cycling. Data from Transport for London show more than 800 School Streets already designated as of April 2025.
The Mayor's Transport Strategy includes plans for 1,000 new zebra and signal-controlled crossings by 2031. It also calls for lower speed limits and measures addressing risks from larger vehicles. A separate Vision Zero plan sets a 2041 target to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on London's roads. The new School Streets form part of that effort.
Boroughs will select and operate the School Streets, while Transport for London supplies a suitability map. All new signal-controlled crossings installed by the end of the decade will include pedestrian countdown timers. Of the School Streets currently operating, 472 use the countdown system and 18 maintain a continuous green signal for pedestrians until a vehicle approaches.
A Transport for London director of transport strategy stated the measures will make streets more pleasant and address safety concerns that deter walking. London's walking and cycling commissioner said the plan will support cleaner air and reduced congestion.
