Los Angeles City Council member Nithya Raman posted statements on May 21, 2026, regarding recovery efforts from wildfires that struck the city in January 2025. Raman wrote that seventeen months after the fires, no rebuilding plan exists and no single person leads recovery efforts.
She stated that millions of dollars have been spent on consultants to produce reports instead of direct action. Raman also noted that new fires burning a few miles outside city limits show the city remains unprepared for future events.
The city council approved funding for 58 additional Los Angeles Fire Department employees. Mayor Bass had proposed 227 new hires for the department. Mayor Bass had proposed 480 new police hires.
Raman has served as the Los Angeles city council member for the 4th district since 2020. She is a member of the Democratic Party and the Democratic Socialists of America. Raman defeated incumbent council member David Ryu in 2020 and was re-elected in 2024.
