Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy placed third in Saturday’s Republican primary and will not advance to the June 27 runoff. Cassidy received fewer votes than Rep. Julia Letlow and state Treasurer John Fleming. Letlow finished first with 45 percent of the vote, while Fleming took second with 28 percent.

Fleming will face each other in the June 27 runoff. Letlow was endorsed by President Trump. Fleming previously served as a White House deputy chief of staff during President Trump’s first term.

Cassidy voted to convict President Trump during the 2021 impeachment trial. He also clashed with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. over changes to federal vaccine recommendations.

“Bill Cassidy is a sleazebag, a terrible guy, who is BAD FOR LOUISIANA. ”

Cassidy, a physician, said in his concession speech that insults from people lacking character and integrity did not bother him.

On the Democratic side, farmer Jamie Davis Jr. advanced to a runoff against either nonprofit executive Nick Albares or retired Navy veteran Gary Crockett. Louisiana’s state Senate advanced a new congressional map that would eliminate one of the state’s two Black-majority districts.
