Lucas Herbert leads the 2026 Open Championship at eight under par after shooting an eight-under-par 62 in the second round at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England. Usa Today reported that Herbert and Sam Burns both carded 62s, tying the lowest score recorded in a men's major.
Herbert, a 30-year-old Australian who plays on the LIV Golf circuit, leads by two strokes over Jackson Suber, Cameron Young and Ryan Gerard.
Seventy-eight golfers advanced to the weekend after finishing at one-over par or better. Jordan Spieth, Viktor Hovland, Justin Rose and Wyndham Clark missed the cut. Bryson DeChambeau received a two-stroke penalty for stomping on long grass at the fifth hole.
Jon Rahm slammed his club at the 15th hole but received no penalty. The third round begins Saturday, July 18. Herbert and Burns became the sixth and seventh players to shoot 62 in a men's major. Herbert's front-nine 28 equaled a course record at Royal Birkdale.
Burns is tied for fifth at five under par. Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm are tied for eighth at four under par. The winner will receive $3.2 million from a total purse of $17.75 million, an increase of $500,000 from 2025.
