Herbert, who has not yet won in his third season on the circuit, reached 17-under par 127 for the tournament.
He began the week feeling ill and had not seen the front nine holes until his opening round Thursday. “I lost track of what score I was on most of the day,” Herbert said. ” He added that he wants to make golf swings he has not been able to make for 12 months.
The third and final round of the 54-hole event is scheduled for Saturday.
Herbert has recorded wins on the PGA Tour of Australasia and the Asian Tour over the last two years. A victory at LIV Golf Virginia would mark his first win in the league. Two players who have already secured two wins each on the LIV Golf circuit this year finished the second round 12 shots behind the leader.
They each posted second-round scores of 70. The event is being held at Trump National in Sterling, Virginia.
