Luigi Mangione is scheduled to appear in Manhattan federal court on Monday morning to address the schedule of his federal trial. Mangione, 28, is accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, 50, on December 4, 2024. The shooting occurred on a Midtown sidewalk outside UnitedHealth’s annual investor conference.
He faces murder and weapons charges in the state case and stalking counts in the federal case. Mangione has pleaded not guilty in both cases. He is being held without bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
He was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, at a McDonald’s after leading police on a five-day manhunt. The state murder case is set to begin jury selection on September 8. The federal trial is currently scheduled for October but may be moved to early 2027.
Prospective jurors in the federal case are scheduled to begin filling out questionnaires on September 11. US District Judge Margaret Garnett has expressed openness to postponing the federal trial until winter.
