Luigi Mangione Heads to Manhattan Court for Pretrial Hearing in CEO Killing Case
Mangione, accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in 2024, faces a key state court hearing this week as his legal defense fund exceeds $1.5 million.
foxnews.comLuigi Mangione's attorneys are scheduled to appear in Manhattan state court this week for a key pretrial hearing in the case accusing him of stalking and murdering Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old CEO of UnitedHealthcare and father of two, on a Manhattan street in 2024.
Mangione, 28, has pleaded not guilty to all charges. His state trial is scheduled to begin in early September, while the federal trial is delayed until next year.
A state judge dismissed terrorism charges against Mangione last September. Earlier this year, a federal judge ruled that Mangione will not face the death penalty. On May 18, state Judge Gregory Carro ruled that the gun, silencer, and notebook allegedly belonging to Mangione are admissible at trial.
Mangione's legal team won a ruling last month allowing the same items into evidence. Mangione is currently detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. 5 million from more than 42,000 donors.
According to a pro-Mangione website created by volunteers, Mangione has received nearly 7,000 personal letters from dozens of countries. According to federal prosecutors, a notebook allegedly kept by Mangione contained handwritten pages expressing hostility toward the health insurance industry and wealthy executives, including a plan to "wack" an insurance company CEO.
In a statement posted on a website created by his legal team, Mangione's attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo rejected the idea that her client espoused political violence.
One donor who contributed $5,000 to Mangione's legal fund wrote online: "I am disturbed by what the government is doing to you. For them, it was and always will be about protecting the 1%. Head up, Luigi.
