The event took place in late May and drew more than 2,000 participants. It was promoted as a celebration of Chinese culture and wellness, with Chinese actor Zhu Yilong scheduled to perform.
Zhu posted a photo on Weibo showing himself beside one of the drums. Users on the platform identified the instrument as a Japanese taiko rather than a Chinese dagu drum and described the choice as inappropriate. Posts related to the drum accumulated more than 50 million views by Monday.
Zhu’s studio publicly urged Lululemon to address the issue. ” Lululemon said it would “learn profound lessons” and adopt “a more rigorous attitude” for future events. It removed all related content from its website and social media accounts.
The Hiiko drum troupe that performed also issued an apology.
