Lymphatic Drainage Facial Uses Massage to Reduce Facial Puffiness

A lymphatic drainage facial involves massaging the face in upward motions to move fluid and reduce puffiness. Dermatologists and estheticians say the technique can improve skin appearance by increasing circulation. The procedure can be performed at home using hands, gua sha tools, brushes or rollers.

A lymphatic drainage facial uses gentle upward massage motions on the face to decrease puffiness and improve skin appearance, according to dermatologists and estheticians. The technique targets the lymphatic system, a network of tissues, vessels and organs including lymph nodes that maintains fluid balance, absorbs fats and removes waste.

Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system has no built-in pump and relies on movement and pressure to function. Michelle Henry, a board-certified dermatologist at Skin & Aesthetic Surgery of Manhattan. When the system slows due to age, diet or daily factors, fluid and waste can accumulate, leading to a puffy facial appearance.

Manual stimulation through massage helps move built-up fluids, reducing puffiness, Henry said. The massage also encourages blood flow, delivering oxygen and nutrients to skin tissue while reducing inflammation. "When there is an accumulation of fluid, it can lead to puffy and dull skin," said Kylee Kintis, a licensed esthetician at FarmHouse Fresh.

"Lymphatic drainage is a great way to reduce this puffiness and sculpt your face. " The skin can appear more lifted and brightened through increased circulation and fluid movement, Kintis added.

The facial can be performed using hands or tools including a gua sha stone, facial brush, roller or vibrating massager. A gua sha tool made of self-cooling stone is often used to glide along the jawline and cheekbones. A lymphatic brush with soft bristles can provide gentle exfoliation while massaging.

Other options include a Y-shaped or T-shaped vibrating massager and a set combining a gua sha tool with a freezable roller. Reviewers have noted the cold roller combined with massage helps address puffiness and inflammation. To perform lymphatic drainage at home, hands or tools should first be clean.

A serum or face oil is applied for lubrication. Massage should follow the natural direction of lymph flow, generally moving outward from the center of the face toward the temples. Pressure should remain light and consistent. Sessions of a few minutes are sufficient, as longer or more aggressive massage can irritate the skin, both experts said.
