A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck late Friday local time roughly eight miles south of Honaunau-Napoopoo on Hawaii’s Big Island at a depth of about 14 miles. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the event and confirmed it was widely felt across the islands of Hawaii, Maui, and Oahu.

No Tsunami Expected The U.S.

Tsunami Warning Centers and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center stated that no tsunami was expected. Officials added there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said it was assessing the Kilauea volcano following the quake. Kilauea has been erupting episodically since December 23, 2024. An earlier observatory update on Friday forecast the next eruption sometime between May 24 and May 27.
