Maine Democratic Senate Nominee Denies Sexual Assault Allegation as Party Leaders Urge Withdrawal

Graham Platner, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Maine, faces calls from senior party leaders to withdraw from the race after a woman he dated accused him of sexual assault in late 2021. Jenny Racicot told Politico that Platner entered her home uninvited while intoxicated and forced himself on her despite repeated refusals.

She said the two met on Bumble in 2019 and maintained an on-again, off-again relationship until the alleged incident. Racicot did not file a police report. Platner denied the allegation. He stated that the accusations are false and that any claim of non-consensual behavior is categorically untrue.

Bernie Sanders called on Platner to withdraw on July 7, 2026. Ro Khanna also called for him to drop out. Ruben Gallego withdrew his endorsement. Hakeem Jeffries, Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand urged immediate withdrawal.

Platner postponed campaign events after the report. He faces a July 13, 2026 deadline to withdraw. Maine Democrats could select a replacement by July 27 if he steps aside in time for the November election.
